Starfinder

What is Starfinder?

Starfinder is a science fantasy tabletop RPG published by Paizo — the same company behind Pathfinder. Set in the distant future of the Pathfinder universe, Starfinder takes the familiar d20 mechanics of D&D/Pathfinder and launches them into space. Starships, laser guns, alien species, and the Gap — a mysterious period of lost history — define the setting.

The Pact Worlds are the core setting: a solar system of diverse planets and stations united (loosely) under a common government. Beyond the Pact Worlds lies the Vast — billions of unexplored stars, alien civilizations, and ancient mysteries waiting to be discovered.

Magic Meets Technology

One of Starfinder’s defining features is the coexistence of magic and technology. Technomancers cast spells through computers. Solarions manifest cosmic power through solar weapons. Mystics heal with divine magic. And your android operative with a sniper rifle is just as viable as a vesk soldier with a plasma cannon.

This blend creates a unique tone — it’s not hard sci-fi, it’s science fantasy. Think Star Wars more than The Expanse. Magic is real, gods exist, and the universe is full of wonder and danger in equal measure.

Why Play Starfinder?

  • Familiar mechanics: If you know D&D or Pathfinder, you already know 80% of Starfinder. The d20 + modifier system is the same.
  • Seven character classes: Solarion, Operative, Mechanic, Mystic, Soldier, Technomancer, and Witchwarper. Each plays very differently.
  • Starship combat: Dedicated starship combat rules with roles like Pilot, Gunner, Engineer, and Captain. It’s a mini-game within the game.
  • Alien species: Play as androids, lashuntas, vesk, ysoki, shirren, and more. Each race has unique abilities and culture.

Core Mechanics

Starfinder uses the classic d20 + modifiers vs. target number system. Attack rolls, skill checks, and saving throws all use the same core mechanic. The system adds Starfinder-specific elements like Resolve Points (a meta-currency for staying alive), Stamina Points (buffer HP that regenerates), and detailed equipment progression.

Character progression follows the D&D model: 20 levels, with ability score increases, class features, and feats at regular intervals. Equipment levels matter — upgrading your armor and weapons is a core part of character advancement.

Pro Tip

Starfinder’s equipment and gear system is more important than in most RPGs. Your level determines what gear you should have, and being under-equipped is dangerous. Don’t neglect your shopping trips — that new weapon or armor upgrade can be the difference between life and death.
