What is Pathfinder?
Pathfinder is a fantasy tabletop RPG published by Paizo, built on the foundation of D&D 3.5 Edition’s rules but evolved into its own powerhouse system. First released in 2009, Pathfinder offers an enormous depth of character options, tactical combat, and a richly detailed default world called Golarion.
Where D&D 5e prioritizes simplicity and speed, Pathfinder leans into complexity. Character creation involves meaningful choices at every level — feats, archetypes, multiclassing, and ability score increases create a build-crafting experience that appeals to players who love optimization and mechanical depth.
Pathfinder 1e vs 2e
Pathfinder 1st Edition (2009) is the classic — a massive, sprawling system with thousands of feats, spells, and class options accumulated over a decade of supplements. It’s beloved for its depth but can be overwhelming for newcomers.
Pathfinder 2nd Edition (2019) streamlined the system while keeping the crunch. It introduced a clean three-action economy, a unified proficiency system, and a more balanced power curve. PF2e is widely considered one of the best-designed tactical RPG systems available today.
Why Play Pathfinder?
- Character builds galore: Hundreds of feats, class archetypes, and multiclassing options mean no two characters play the same. If you love theorycrafting, Pathfinder is your playground.
- Tactical combat: Grid-based combat with meaningful positioning, flanking, and action economy makes every fight a puzzle to solve.
- The world of Golarion: A richly developed setting with diverse nations, gods, and cultures — from the steampunk city of Alkenstar to the horror-tinged Ustalav.
- Open Gaming License: Paizo’s commitment to open content means a huge library of free and third-party material.
Core Mechanics
Pathfinder uses a d20-based system similar to D&D but with more granular modifiers. In PF2e, every character has a proficiency rank (Trained, Expert, Master, Legendary) that scales with level, keeping the math tight and predictable.
The three-action economy in PF2e is the system’s crown jewel: each turn, you get three actions to spend on anything — Strike, Move, Cast a Spell, Raise a Shield, and more. This creates dynamic, tactical decisions every round.
New to Pathfinder? Start with 2nd Edition. The Beginner Box is an excellent, inexpensive introduction that teaches the system through a guided adventure. PF2e is more approachable than its reputation suggests.
